Rule of Thirds

This week's assignment was about the rule of thirds. We as the photographers, must use the contrast of the environment to our advantage and really make the subject of the picture pop out from the background. We can also make the subject stand out by blurring the background and really focusing the camera on the subject of the photo. While doing this, the subject must not take up most of the image, only one- third of it. The reason for doing this is to balance the weight of the subject in the photo with the weight of the background, rather than it being straight in the middle, stealing all the attention.

  1. Stefan,
Your photos are clearly thought out. I especially like the first one. Just a couple of your photos could be cropped a little more to make the rule of thirds just a little more out there. Great job though!

  2. I really like your use of black and white and muted colors to help convey the rule of thirds! I can clearly see the rule of thirds portrayed in your images, although the last one seems to be cut almost in half. They're all super cool to look at though! Good job!

  3. You clearly illustrated the rule of thirds and they are all rvery visible, makign a super nice layout for the picture. I really liek the one with the motorcycle but maybe you could either brighten up the background or make it sort of black and white and dull it out if the motorcycle is your subject. I also really like the flower (the last one) picture and the perspective you were at. nice workk

  4. you really got the assignment, your use of black and white clearly shows the rule of thirds. i agree with Grace though, the picture with the vespa is it would look better if it were in black and white or if the red popped a little more.

  5. Awesome photos! It really looks like you understood conveyed the purpose of the assignment well. The division of thirds is really clear. I agree with Kaity too, maybe some images could be cropped just a little bit more to show the division of thirds more clearly. I love the vespa photo, really classy.

  6. I really like your photos and how you grasp the concept of rule of thirds. All of your pictures have a dramatic tone, which is really nice. My favorite photo was the last picture, the flower was in a nice angle and the colors worked well with one another. Good job!

  7. Stephan, you did an awesome job with this assignment. I really like your last photo with the flower. it is a great example of nature within an urban city. I also like your photo with the moped. The bright red really catches your eye and it is also positioned with the sidewalk lines to create depth. Great Job!

  9. I really like all your photos! I especially like your use of black and white to highlight the subjects you show in your photos. My favorite photo is the one with the flower against the Drew building background, I think it really shows a strong aesthetically-pleasing contrast between the building and the flower. Great job overall!
